Chief (City).

In Judah (Josh. 15: 60).

Chief city of the Ammonites, in the deep fertile valley of the Upper Jabbock (Deut. 3: 11; Josh. 13: 25); taken by David (2 Sam. 11: 1; 2 Sam. 12: 26-27, 29; 2 Sam. 17: 27; 1 Chr. 20: 1); prophecies against (Jer. 49: 2-3; Ezek. 25: 5; Amos 1: 14). Later it received the name of Philadelphia. It is not mentioned in the N.T., but it was a town of importance during the Roman occupation, and was one of the cities of the Decapolis. There are still extensive ruins at the modern Amman.
