In the scriptures, poor can refer to people who are without needed material goods, such as food, clothing, and shelter, or people who are humble and without pride.

Poor in material goods: Thou shalt not shut thine hand from thy poor brother, Deut. 15: 7. The wicked in his pride doth persecute the poor, Ps. 10: 2. He that giveth unto the poor shall not lack, Prov. 28: 27. Bring the poor to thy house, Isa. 58: 6-7. If thou wilt be perfect, give to the poor, Matt. 19: 21 (Mark 10: 21; Luke 18: 22). Hath not God chosen the poor of this world? James 2: 5. Because they are rich they despise the poor, 2 Ne. 9: 30. To retain a remission of your sins, impart of your substance to the poor, Mosiah 4: 26. They did impart of their substance to the poor, Alma 1: 27. If ye turn away the needy, your prayer is vain, Alma 34: 28. The Nephites had all things in common; there were not rich and poor, 4 Ne. 1: 3. Thou wilt remember the poor, D&C 42: 30 (D&C 52: 40). Wo unto the poor whose hearts are not broken, D&C 56: 17-18. The poor will come unto the marriage of the Lamb, D&C 58: 6-11. The bishop is to search after the poor, D&C 84: 112. Gospel law governs the care of the poor, D&C 104: 17-18. There was no poor among them, Moses 7: 18.

Poor in spirit: More blessed are those who humble themselves without being compelled because of poverty, Alma 32: 4-6, 12-16. Blessed are the poor in spirit who come unto me, 3 Ne. 12: 3 (Matt. 5: 3). The poor and meek shall have the gospel preached unto them, D&C 35: 15.
