To gain a knowledge of or to perceive the meaning of some truth, including its application to life.

Lean not unto thine own understanding, Prov. 3: 5. With all thy getting get understanding, Prov. 4: 7. Jesus spoke in parables and some did not understand, Matt. 13: 12-17. The Lord opened their understanding, Luke 24: 45. If ye cannot understand these words, it will be because ye ask not, 2 Ne. 32: 4 (3 Ne. 17: 3). The records were preserved so that we might read and understand, Mosiah 1: 2-5. Because of their unbelief, they could not understand the word of God, Mosiah 26: 3.
